Job Description

The Environmental & Social Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive Environmental & Social Management System (ESMS) for ETG Climate Solutions (ETGCS) and their partner Empowering Farmers Foundation (EFF) in the Tukuze Kilifi Project, ensuring that all carbon and nature-based projects operate in alignment with international E&S standards, internal corporate requirements, and stakeholder expectations.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. ESMS Development & Implementation
  • Lead the design, development, and rollout of a comprehensive Environmental & Social Management System tailored to EFF/ETG CS operations and supply chain.
  • Integrate ESMS components into operational decision-making frameworks, project development cycles, and partner management.
  • Ensure the ESMS encompasses:
  • Risk and impact identification & screening procedures
  • Define roles and responsibilities for E&S, grievance, and carbon roles
  • Organizational capacity & training plans
  • Emergency preparedness & response
  • Stakeholder engagement & grievance mechanisms
  • Reporting & continuous improvement mechanisms
  • Establish formal review processes to evaluate ESMS effectiveness annually or per project cycle.
2. Organization Capacity & Competency Building
  • Define, document, and assign E&S roles and responsibilities across ETGCS, EFF, and partners.
  • Conduct competency assessments and identify training needs for internal staff and implementation partners.
  • Lead internal upskilling on E&S topics relevant to nature-based solutions, carbon projects, and supply chain operations, such as: Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) capacity building and Pollution Prevention and Hazardous Materials Management measures.
  • Serve as the primary internal E&S focal point for technical and operational guidance.
3. Stakeholder & Partner Engagement
  • Coordinate with project implementation partners to ensure E&S compliance and embedding of ESMS protocols in field operations.
  • Establish structured stakeholder engagement strategies, including community interface processes, consultation guidelines, and grievance handling procedures.
  • Facilitate communication between ETGCS and EFF leadership, operational teams, community stakeholders, and external auditors.
4. Monitoring, Reporting & Verification
  • Develop and maintain monitoring and reporting mechanisms to track ESMS performance, E&S KPIs, incidents, and corrective actions.
  • Support alignment with relevant E&S standards, including those applicable to Nature-Based Solutions projects and carbon methodologies.
  • Prepare documentation for external verification, certification audits, and investor/donor reporting where required.
  • Conduct regular monitoring visits to ground truth E&S performance and implement corrective action plans with partners where required.
5. Emergency Preparedness & Incident Response
  • Develop emergency preparedness and response protocols relevant to operational and field project contexts.
  • Maintain incident reporting structures and ensure corrective and preventive actions are tracked and closed out.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree in Environmental Science, Social Sciences, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Development Studies, Anthropology, or related field.
  • 5+ years’ experience implementing E&S responsibilities in ARR, forestry, NbS, or rural development programs.
  • Experience with Verra VM0047 or other AFOLU methodologies (REDD+, ARR, ALM, Wetlands) strongly preferred.
  • Experience with CCB Standards, IFC Performance Standards, FPIC, and participatory tools.
  • Proven experience in stakeholder consultation, community-based resource management, and tenure/rights analysis.
  • Working proficiency in English language and Kiswahili is required for this role.
